Skin Needling

What is the key to clearer and firmer skin? The answer is simple: collagen and elastin production.
Skin needling, also known as micro-needling or collagen induction therapy, is a cosmetic procedure that involves using a device with fine needles to create tiny punctures in the skin.

Skin needling treatment can be great for stimulating collagen and elastin growth when the production of these two essential proteins has slowed down over time.

The treatment can target skin concerns, such as reducing scarring, stretch marks, blackheads, open pores, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation. As an added benefit, skin needling treatments are fast and comfortable and can target large or multiple areas simultaneously.

At Esteem Clinic, we understand the importance of personalised care and individual aesthetic aspirations regarding skin needling treatments. Before any micro-needling treatment, we offer a complimentary consultation to attentively address your concerns, assess the suitability of the treatment, and understand your unique aesthetic goals.

How skin needling / micro-needling works

Skin needling (or micro-needling) uses tiny needles to penetrate the top layer. These micro-needles create small perforations (or micro-channels) in the deeper layers of the skin. This triggers the body’s natural wound-healing response, stimulating new collagen and elastin formation. For this reason, the treatment is also called collagen induction therapy.

The body’s ability to remodel and heal itself is at the heart of the treatment. The skin can quickly heal with minimal downtime since the process never involves heat, thermal energy, chemicals or unnecessary trauma.

Your micro-needling consultation

Your consultation with one of our skin therapists will help you understand the treatment details, how to properly care for your skin after your treatment and what you can expect for your results.

Skin assessment

Your skin therapist will examine your skin to evaluate its condition, including texture, tone, elasticity, and any specific concerns you may have, such as acne scars, fine lines, or hyperpigmentation. This will help determine if you are suitable for skin needling and guide the treatment plan.

Treatment goals

You can discuss your desired outcomes and expectations from the skin needling procedure. This could involve addressing specific skin concerns, improving overall skin appearance, or targeting particular areas of the face or body.

Medical history

The skin therapist will ask about your medical history, including any pre-existing skin conditions, allergies, or ongoing treatments. It is essential to disclose any relevant information to ensure that skin needling is the proper treatment for you and to avoid potential complications.

Previous treatments

You will be asked about any previous cosmetic procedures or skin treatments you have undergone. This information helps your skin therapist understand your skincare history and determine the suitability and timing of skin needling other treatments.

Expectations and limitations

The therapist will explain what skin needling can and cannot achieve. They will discuss the expected results, the number of sessions needed, and any limitations based on your skin type, condition, and specific concerns. This discussion will help you establish realistic expectations for the treatment.

Procedure Details

The skin therapist will explain the skin-needling procedure, including the type of device used, the depth of needle penetration, and the expected sensation during the treatment. They will address any concerns regarding pain, discomfort, or downtime associated with the procedure.

Preparations and aftercare

You will receive detailed instructions on preparing your skin before the treatment, which may involve avoiding certain skincare products or medications. Your skin therapist will also guide post-treatment care, including skincare routines, sun protection, and any restrictions on activities or products following the procedure.

Treatment costs
Since your treatment is personalised, your costs will need to be calculated during your consultation after creating your individualised treatment plan.

Risks and complications

The skin therapist will discuss the potential risks and complications associated with skin needling and the steps taken to minimise those risks. They will address any specific concerns and provide information to help you make an informed decision about proceeding with the treatment.

Skin needling costs in Gold Coast, Brisbane and Ipswich

Every skin needling treatment at Esteem Clinic is tailored to each patient’s needs. Therefore, the costs can differ from patient to patient.

Multiple personalised factors can influence the costs, including:

Treatment area and extent

The size and area being treated can affect the cost. More extensive treatment areas may have higher prices than smaller areas, such as localised scars or specific wrinkles.

Number of sessions

Skin needling treatments usually require multiple sessions for optimal results. The total number of sessions recommended for your specific concerns and goals can impact the overall cost.

Skin condition and complexity

The severity and complexity of your skin condition can influence the cost. If you have more advanced concerns, such as deep acne scars or extensive sun damage, additional time may be required, affecting the overall price.

Your desired results

Your desired results will ultimately determine the complexity of the treatment and the number of treatment sessions. If you want a subtle improvement, you will likely need fewer treatment sessions, while if you want a more dramatic improvement, your skin will need more attention to achieve ideal results.

To receive a personalised quote, you must book a consultation at your preferred location (Gold Coast or Brisbane) to discuss the details of your personalised treatment plan. Your complimentary consultation will allow you to make an informed decision as to whether or not you are happy to undergo the treatment.

What to expect after your treatment

There is little to no downtime with a skin needling treatment.

Slight tingling and warmth to the skin may be experienced after your session, which may last for 24 to 48 hours before the healing begins and the new skin starts to reveal itself. Skin will appear red for one to three days, similar to a sunburn. Swelling or bruising may occur, and this varies from client to client.

Dryness can be experienced a few days post-treatment. Your skin will also be more sensitive to the sun post-treatment, so apply an SPF 50+ sunblock when out and about.

Post-treatment care

Since you will have a customised treatment plan, we’ll also provide personalised recovery instructions to care for your skin correctly.

Generally, your post-treatment care instructions can include to:

  • Use prescribed cream to alleviate irritation for three to five days post-micro-needling
  • Avoid using advanced AHA’s, BHA’s, Retin A and exfoliation products for five days post-treatment
  • Avoid itching or scratching the skin
  • Avoid direct sun exposure and solarium use for a minimum of two weeks, as this will increase the chance of developing pigmentation and burning
  • Apply SPF 30+ and 50+ sunscreen daily
  • Avoid heat-induced activities like saunas, hot showers, and exercise and avoid swimming or 24 hours post-treatment
  • Do not pick or exfoliate your skin for three to five days, as this may introduce bacteria or cause hyperpigmentation

Risks and complications

The potential complications of skin needling can be avoided or minimised by ensuring that candidates are suitable for the treatment and following preparation and aftercare advice. Our team will inform you of the associated risks during your consultation so that you can ask any questions to gain clarity and know what to expect.

The risks and side effects of skin needling can include:

Skin irritation and redness: After your treatment, it is common to experience temporary skin irritation, redness, and swelling. These effects typically resolve within a few hours to a couple of days.

Infection: Skin needling involves creating micro-injuries on the skin’s surface, which can increase the risk of infection if proper precautions are not taken.

Skin pigmentation changes: In rare cases, skin needling can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (darkening) or hypopigmentation (lightening). These changes in pigmentation are usually temporary but can persist for several months.

Scarring: Although uncommon, skin needling has the potential to cause scarring, primarily if the procedure is performed too aggressively or on sensitive areas of the skin. This risk can be minimised by ensuring that the depth of needle penetration is appropriate for the individual’s skin type and condition. You can also minimise this risk by closely following your aftercare instructions.

Acne flare-ups: Sometimes, skin needling can trigger acne breakouts or worsen existing acne. This is more likely to occur in individuals with acne or oily skin history. Proper aftercare and hygiene can help minimise this risk and ensure that candidates are not currently experiencing any severe breakouts or infections in the desired treatment area.

FAQs

Who is not a suitable candidate?

The following people are not suitable for skin needling. Anyone who:

  • Is pregnant
  • Has had any laser resurfacing in the last three months
  • Currently has a bacterial or fungal infection
  • Has cold sores, acne, or any other skin infection
  • Has a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring

What can I expect from my results?

Results of skin needling can be seen after six weeks and last up to one to three months. Skin needling can deliver fantastic results that include the following:

  • Reduction in skin imperfections and scarring, stretch marks, blackheads, open pores, fine lines, hyperpigmentation and more
  • Increased effectiveness of active skincare ingredients
  • Increased communication between the skin cells responsible for the skin barrier function, pigmentation, collagen and elastin

What areas can be treated?

Skin needling is used to treat the face, neck and décolletage.

How long does a treatment session take?

The total treatment time is approximately 30 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area.

How many treatment sessions do I need, and how often?

Your treatment results can last for up to one to three months, but this can vary per person. Two to three treatments will ensure collagen is sufficiently stimulated, and regular treatments help to maintain the best results.

Regular treatments are recommended to ensure continued improvements and maximum benefit from at-home skincare products (ability to absorb and have an effect).

Can micro-needling cause scarring?

Scarring is a potential side effect of the treatment, although it is rare and can be prevented with proper preparation and aftercare.
